Bangkok:Law enforcement in Bangkok has made a significant breakthrough in its ongoing battle against drug trafficking, seizing 23 million methamphetamine pills as part of the "Safe BKK 90 Days" campaign.
According to Thai News Agency, this operation is a collaborative effort involving the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, the Metropolitan Police Command, and the Narcotics Suppression Police Command. The campaign, which began in February, aims to tackle the drug problem in the capital.
In a recent raid, officers targeted two houses in the Wat Thung Khru community in Thung Khru district, arresting seven small-scale drug dealers and confiscating both methamphetamine pills and crystal meth. Authorities have also identified approximately 30-40 drug users who will be directed to rehabilitation programs.
Governor Chatchart reported that the operation has resulted in the seizure of over 23 million methamphetamine pills, about 2,000 kilograms of crystal meth, and the confiscation of assets valued at more than 250 million baht from various drug trafficking networks. This initiative aims to enhance public confidence by continuing beyond its initial 90-day period.
Pol. Maj. Gen. Teeradet Thamsuthee, Deputy Commander of the Bangkok Metropolitan Police, noted that the operation faced challenges due to the area's narrow alleys and connections to canals or neighboring provinces, which facilitated suspect escapes. Despite this, officers successfully apprehended suspects who attempted to flee by jumping into water or climbing rooftops. Drones and roadblocks were employed to capture key suspects trying to escape on motorcycles.
