ASEAN Chair Initiates Dialogue to Mend Thailand-Cambodia Relations


Cebu city: The ASEAN Chair is taking proactive steps to mend the strained relations between Thailand and Cambodia by coordinating discussions with the leaders of the two nations. The initiative aims to restore relations and enhance regional stability.



According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkaew, participated in the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting during the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu City, Philippines. He revealed that the trilateral discussions involving Thailand, the Philippines, and Cambodia were initiated by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the current ASEAN Chair. The President aims to facilitate a meeting between Thailand and Cambodia to promote stability in the region, focusing on sincere and serious dialogue to overcome existing conflicts.



Thailand has consistently expressed a desire to avoid conflicts with neighboring countries and to maintain amicable relations, which are seen as mutually beneficial. However, the path to stable progress necessitates the establishment of trust, which is fundamental for the gradual development of relations. During the forthcoming discussions, the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia are expected to explore forward-looking strategies to resolve conflicts, with the hope that the dialogue will occur in a constructive atmosphere.



Mr. Sihasak emphasized that the discussions were initiated by the Philippines, under its ASEAN chairmanship, and that Thailand has accepted the invitation to participate, reflecting its commitment to regional harmony.
