APEC Strengthens Thailand-China Ties and Negotiates Tariff Reductions with the US

Bangkok: Assistant Professor Dr. Chettha Sap-yen, Assistant President of Navamindradhiraj University, shared insights on the "Share News" program on MCOT NEWS FM 100.5 regarding the pivotal role played by Thai Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul at the recent APEC summit. He emphasized Anutin's preparedness for the crucial meetings with leaders from superpowers China and the United States, confirming that Thai-Chinese relations remain stable. Notably, Chinese President Xi Jinping praised Thailand for its stance against operating casinos, a gesture that has significantly revitalized trade and tourism ties between the two nations. According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Anutin's meeting with US President Donald Trump, following their previous encounter in Malaysia, resulted in a successful negotiation to reduce import tariffs on Thai goods to below 19%, an agreement that reflects Thailand's adeptness in maintaining balanced relations with both the US and China. This strategic dipl omacy has alleviated concerns over potential Chinese dissatisfaction stemming from past events in Malaysia. Furthermore, Thailand's strengthened ties with both China and the US have indirectly pressured Cambodia, enhancing the credibility of the joint Thai-Cambodian statement and drawing global attention. This diplomatic success has bolstered Thailand's international image, economic stability, and interest from foreign investors, particularly in agriculture with promising rice sales negotiations. In light of these developments, Thailand has articulated its ambition to emerge as a regional hub for fostering friendship and advancing trade and investment.
