Anutin Prioritizes Public Safety with Free Expressways During Songkran

Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, is emphasizing public safety during the Songkran festival by highlighting the critical message of "don't drink and drive." The government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, is providing free expressways to ease travel expenses and enhance convenience for citizens during this festive period.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, disclosed that measures have been put in place to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce travel costs. From April 10-16, 2026, the Burapha Vithee and Kanchanaphisek Expressways (Bang Phli-Suksawat) will be toll-free. Additionally, the Udon Ratchaya, Sri Ratch, and Chalerm Mahanakhon Expressways will offer free access from April 13-15, 2026.

In a broader effort to facilitate travel, the Ministry of Transport announced free access to three main motorway routes from April 10-16, 2026, including M7 Bangkok-Chonburi-Pattaya-Map Ta Phut, M9 Bangkok Outer Ring Road, and M81 Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi. New routes, such as M6 (Bang Pa-in-Nakhon Ratchasima) and M82 (Bang Khun Thian-Ekachai), are also being trialed to ease congestion on key roads, with traffic management measures in place.

The Songkran festival typically sees an influx of travelers heading to their hometowns, but rising fuel prices have impacted travel plans for some. As noted by the spokesperson, the government's initiatives are designed to reduce costs and promote safety, ensuring that Songkran remains a joyous occasion for all families.
