Anutin Opens Center to Tackle Songkran 2026 Road Accidents

Bangkok: The Prime Minister has announced heightened security measures for Songkran 2026, concentrating on decreasing accidents during the festival's seven-day dangerous period. The initiative aims to cut down on fatalities and injuries, with a major focus on the "Don't Drink and Drive" campaign.

According to Thai News Agency, today, Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, led the inauguration of the Road Accident Prevention and Reduction Command Center for the Songkran Festival 2026. This move underscores the government's commitment to ensuring the safety and security of travelers during this significant holiday period.

Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, communicated that the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of the Songkran festival as it sees a high volume of travel. Consequently, the government is prioritizing the facilitation and safety of travelers, marking April 10-16, 2026, as the "7-day dangerous period." The focus is on minimizing the number of accidents, injuries, and fatalities during this time.

The Prime Minister has outlined several directives to enhance road safety. The public is requested to observe principles such as "Don't drink and drive, get enough rest, and respect traffic laws" to foster a culture of road safety. Additionally, there is a concerted effort to facilitate travel through improved public transportation, service points, checkpoints, and stringent law enforcement.

Moreover, the government is preparing medical and public health infrastructure nationwide to respond to emergencies around the clock. There is also a focus on managing traffic and ensuring safety during Songkran activities, aiming for a seamless process and minimizing disruptions for road users.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of cooperation from all sectors, including road users, in reducing losses and ensuring a safe Songkran festival for everyone in Thailand.
