Anutin Clarifies Position on Defense Act and Political Allegiances

BANGKOK: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has refuted claims of opposing all government initiatives, emphasizing his disagreement with coups and support for constitutional governance, following his suspension of the draft Defense Organization Act. According to Thai News Agency, Anutin addressed comments made by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who suggested Anutin was too hasty in his political maneuvers. Anutin clarified that his opposition to the Ministry of Defense's draft bill was not a reflection of his party's stance but rather an adherence to constitutional principles. He stressed that the Bhumjaithai Party, which he represents, does not endorse revolutions, citing constitutional sections that prohibit such actions. Anutin further explained that the draft amendment was proposed by an individual MP and was not affiliated with party directives. He asserted that his party's position was consistent with maintaining stability and preventing coups, and that any le gislative changes should first be discussed among coalition partners. Anutin emphasized that his comments were made on behalf of the Bhumjaithai Party and not the coalition government as a whole. In response to Thaksin's remarks suggesting Anutin should consult before objecting to policies, Anutin reiterated the importance of dialogue within the coalition and expressed his willingness to cooperate on beneficial initiatives. He dismissed any notion of personal criticism toward Thaksin, acknowledging their long-standing relationship and mutual respect. Anutin also addressed perceptions that the Bhumjaithai Party is in competition with the Pheu Thai Party during local elections, highlighting the administrative role of the Ministry of the Interior in facilitating smooth electoral processes. He maintained that the focus remains on gaining public trust rather than measuring political strength.
