AI’s Transformative Impact on Global Workforce Discussed at Global Meeting

Siena:The topic of artificial intelligence and its effect on employment was a focal point during the World Bank Group Annual Meetings 2026, emphasizing the rapid and profound influence AI technology is exerting on the global economy.

According to Thai News Agency, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates that AI will significantly affect jobs worldwide, with a notable impact on white-collar jobs, which constitute about 40% of employment in developed countries. The effects may vary in developing nations.

AI presents a double-edged sword, offering opportunities for increased productivity while potentially exacerbating inequality. Although AI can vastly enhance work efficiency, it requires careful management and equitable access to prevent widening disparities between countries and workforce skill levels.

The importance of upskilling and reskilling the workforce was emphasized by Kristalina Georgieva, who pointed out that halting AI's advancement is not feasible. Instead, it is crucial to equip both current and future workers with skills relevant to the digital era to ensure they can "work alongside AI" rather than be replaced by it.

Collaboration among governments and international organizations is necessary to develop regulatory frameworks and policies that encourage AI innovation while protecting ethical standards, data security, and reducing adverse social effects.

Georgieva also noted that AI is not a remote concept but a significant force poised to transform the global economy. She stressed the importance of rapid adaptation, investing in education and human skills development, and crafting inclusive policies that ensure no one is left behind amid technological advancements.
