Bangkok: A 15-year-old high school student opened fire at a well-known school in Kamphaeng Phet, causing teachers and students to flee in panic before police apprehended him.
According to Thai News Agency, the incident occurred at 2:00 PM when the male student, who was under treatment for depression, used a 9mm handgun to fire shots from the school entrance to the classroom building. The chaos ensued as teachers and students changing classes rushed to safety.
Officers inspecting the scene discovered spent bullet casings near the guard post, and a teacher's red sedan bore bullet marks. Numerous casings, both spent and unspent, were found scattered in front of Building 2's physical education hall, and a bullet hole was noticed in the glass door. Police and rescue teams managed to control the situation and arrest the student promptly.
A security guard recounted that the student fired a shot that grazed him before entering the school. A physical education teacher described the tense moments when he heard the gunshots and led students to safety, assisting them into the auditorium for protection.
In response to the incident, Mr. Chatip Rujanaseri, Governor of Kamphaeng Phet Province, and Mr. Suwanit Suriyakul Na Ayutthaya, Deputy Governor, alongside police, soldiers, and officials, arrived to manage the situation, ensure security, and comfort worried parents. The motive remains under investigation, and the school will remain closed for two days, shifting to online classes. Parents are encouraged to trust the safety measures that will be in place once the school reopens.
