Bangkok: Narumon, Minister of Agriculture, presided over the opening ceremony of the 123rd anniversary of the Royal Irrigation Department under the concept of '123 Years of Water Power, Power of the Future (Power of Water - Power Driven Future)', emphasizing the important role of the Royal Irrigation Department in managing water in a stable and sustainable manner to develop the economy and improve the quality of life of people nationwide.
According to Thai News Agency, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Narumon Pinyosinwat, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, presided over the event, with Mr. Itthi Sirilathayakorn, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, and other departmental executives in attendance. Narumon highlighted the department's mission to continue the royal intention in water management, focusing on expanding access to water across all regions to support economic and social development while preventing water-related damage.
Over recent years, the Royal Irrigation Department has followed the 'RID UNITED' policy, aiming for 'Jointly creating sustainable water security' and aspiring to become a 'smart organization' by 2037. This strategy emphasizes integration with various sectors, technological advancements, and climate change responses.
For the dry season of 2024/25, the department effectively managed water usage across sectors, particularly agriculture. The planting area for dry season rice increased by over 900,000 rai from the previous year, totaling over 10 million rai, with no water shortages. Additionally, lowland areas like Thung Bang Rakam expanded by another 60,000 rai without yield damage, preparing for the 2025 rainy season to minimize impacts on the populace.
The ceremony also recognized virtuous organizations and outstanding civil servants, presented management quality development awards, and hosted academic seminars on water resources. Volunteer blood donation activities were organized, underscoring the Royal Irrigation Department's role in promoting sustainable water, economic, social, and environmental security nationwide.
