Bangkok: Yotsanan Wongsawat has expressed his joy following his appointment as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation. He plans to address the nation’s energy crisis and PM2.5 dust problem in the North through innovation, and he aims to work within parliamentary mechanisms without party divides.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Wongsawat, representing the Pheu Thai Party’s party-list, acknowledged the responsibilities accompanying his new role after receiving the Royal Decree of appointment. He emphasized his commitment to leveraging innovation and higher education to tackle various issues. His agenda includes addressing renewable energy, biodiesel production, and converting solar power into biodiesel for machinery and engines. Additionally, he plans to combat PM2.5 pollution and wildfires affecting the North using satellite imagery and university collaboration.
When questioned about the government’s direction without a grace period, Mr. Wongsawat highlighted the focus on vulnerable groups, including children, education, social welfare, and the elderly. The government intends to work closely with relevant agencies, with immediate plans to outline long-term strategies for the coming years. Mr. Wongsawat stressed the importance of bridging the gap between political parties to ensure effective governance through parliamentary channels.
He also identified two urgent policy areas: addressing inequality in higher education and restructuring the system to equip individuals with skills for the global economy. Collaboration with other ministries, such as the Ministry of Finance, is deemed crucial for achieving economic and educational progress.
