Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated China's firm stance against Taiwan's independence during a meeting with Taiwan's opposition party leader. Xi emphasized that pro-independence movements are major obstacles to peace in the Taiwan Strait.
According to Thai News Agency, Cheng Li-wen, chairwoman of Taiwan's largest opposition party, the Kuomintang, is visiting China on what she describes as a "peace mission." Her visit comes amid increasing military pressure from China on Taiwan. In their meeting at the Great Hall of the People, Xi reiterated the importance of peace, stating that people on both sides of the Strait are part of the same family and share a desire for peace, development, and cooperation. He firmly stated that China would not tolerate any move towards Taiwan's independence.
Cheng Li-wen conveyed to President Xi that the people of Taiwan desire mutually beneficial cross-strait relations and reciprocal interactions. She expressed her hope to welcome Xi and his delegation to Taiwan in the future, emphasizing the need for both sides to prevent the Taiwan Strait from becoming a conflict zone or a tool for external interference. Cheng advocated for building sustainable mechanisms for dialogue and cooperation between the two sides.
The Chinese government continues its policy of refusing to negotiate with Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te, labeling him a "separatist." Meanwhile, the Taiwanese government has urged President Cheng to communicate with the Chinese authorities, asking them to cease intimidation and instead engage in negotiations with Taiwan's democratically elected government in Taipei.
