According to Thai News Agency, the widespread use of chemicals, particularly Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in industrial applications, historically posed a significant threat to the ozone layer. These chemicals, found in products like aerosol sprays, refrigerators, and air conditioners, release chlorine radicals when broken down by UV radiation in the stratosphere. This process was responsible for the depletion of ozone molecules, leading to the well-documented "ozone hole" over Antarctica.
The thinning of the ozone layer could have severe consequences. For humans, it increases the risk of skin cancer, cataracts, and weakens the immune system. In nature, it damages plant cells, reduces agricultural yields, and impacts marine ecosystems by destroying phytoplankton, the base of the marine food chain.
In response to these threats, the global community established the Montreal Protocol in 1987, an agreement to phase out the production and use of ozone-depleting substances. This protocol is widely regarded as one of the most successful environmental agreements, contributing to the ongoing recovery of the ozone layer.
