World Jellyfish Day Highlights the Importance of Jellyfish in Marine Ecosystems

Bangkok:November 3rd is marked as "World Jellyfish Day," an annual event aimed at raising awareness about the significance of jellyfish, which are not only fascinating but also crucial to the marine ecosystem. Despite their simple appearance, jellyfish play a vital role in oceanic life.

According to Thai News Agency, jellyfish are considered the largest plankton and are known for their unique structure, being composed mostly of gelatinous material and up to 95% water. They lack brains but possess venomous tentacles used for defense and capturing prey. These tentacles remain dangerous even after detaching from the jellyfish's body, posing a risk to beachgoers.

Jellyfish inhabit oceans globally, from shallow waters to the deep sea, and some species have even adapted to freshwater environments. They are a key part of the ocean’s ecosystem, serving as a food source for many marine animals and playing a role in energy and carbon cycling. The conservation of jellyfish and their habitats is essential for maintaining a sustainable marine ecosystem.
