Bangkok: Customs and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation officials intercepted a transnational wildlife smuggling ring at Suvarnabhumi Airport, uncovering live wild animals concealed in passengers' luggage, highlighting the persistent issue of illegal wildlife trafficking.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Santhani Pairatnakorn, Director of the Suvarnabhumi Airport Passenger Customs Office, disclosed that Suvarnabhumi Airport Customs, in collaboration with the Suvarnabhumi Airport Wildlife Checkpoint of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation and other relevant agencies, inspected a Thai male passenger arriving from the Republic of the Philippines. During the inspection, live wild animals, specifically one monitor lizard and one large wild rat, were found hidden inside his luggage, with a total estimated value of 50,000 baht. The passenger was detained for further legal action.
This incident highlights the ongoing efforts to combat wildlife trafficking, which is potentially connected to larger transnational smuggling networks. Such activities pose a threat to natural resources, ecosystems, and the country's reputation. The Customs Department has committed to enhancing the rigor of passenger and baggage inspections and will continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to prevent wildlife trafficking, ensuring strict adherence to the CITES convention.
