Pattaya: Pattaya witnessed a significant economic boost as US troops landed in the city five days ago, generating an estimated 100 million baht in revenue. The visit has also contributed to reshaping Pattaya's image as a multifaceted tourist destination.
According to Thai News Agency, Pattaya Mayor Parames Ngampicheth highlighted the positive effects of the US Navy crew's vacation from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. The mayor noted that the economic impact included approximately 100 million baht circulating in the local economy over the duration of the visit. Beyond the economic benefits, the visit has helped promote a "new image" for Pattaya, emphasizing its range of tourist attractions beyond the nightlife and beer bars it was previously known for.
Mayor Parames explained that while nightlife remains part of Pattaya, it is now confined to specific areas. The city offers a wide array of attractions, including shopping centers, restaurants, cultural sites, and activities catering to various tourist demographics. During their stay, US personnel visited popular attractions such as the Sanctuary of Truth, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, and the Four Regions Floating Market. They engaged in activities like elephant riding and shopping, contributing to local businesses.
The precise revenue generated from the visit is still under assessment. However, discussions with business operators and US Embassy officials suggest that personnel spent an average of US$100-150 each, amounting to the estimated 100 million baht influx. This spending was spread across restaurants, cafes, shopping malls, tourist spots, and retail stores, rather than being concentrated in nightlife venues.
Mayor Parames emphasized that the visit's benefits extended beyond financial gains, as it improved Pattaya's image. Media coverage showed US personnel participating in cultural activities, wearing traditional Thai clothing, and visiting historical sites, creating positive publicity for Pattaya without the need for a marketing budget. The travel behavior of US personnel showcased Pattaya as a safe, diverse destination suitable for all ages. The mayor expressed gratitude to Chonburi Province, police, relevant agencies, and the US Embassy for their cooperation in ensuring a secure and welcoming environment.
Feedback from the troops before their departure indicated their appreciation for the hospitality and experiences in Pattaya, exceeding their expectations and leaving them with fond memories of their time in Thailand.
