Unique Floral Batik Patterns Boost Local Skills and Economy

Surat Thani:The Learning Promotion Center in Mueang Surat Thani District and the Community Development Office of Surat Thani Province have teamed up to create unique patterns for commemorative batik fabrics. This initiative aims to foster sustainable livelihoods through educational workshops, with each fabric piece being uniquely crafted.

According to Thai News Agency, a workshop was held at the Surat Thani City District Learning Center, showcasing batik making without wax using the Chomphu Sirin flower pattern. The event attracted members of the Rak Pimjai group and community members, predominantly elderly and retired civil servants, who eagerly participated in crafting distinctive batik fabrics.

Ms. Teunjit Wongswasdi, a senior librarian and trainer, explained that the Chompoo Sirin flower, also known as the Sirindhorn candle, was chosen as a design element on the suggestion of the Surat Thani Provincial Community Development Office. The flower, which commemorates Her Majesty the Queen and is native to the area, was used to create a unique identity for the fabric. This initiative encourages participants to enhance their skills, start their own businesses, and generate income.

The Chompoo Sirin flower design on batik fabric not only highlights the cultural identity of Southern Thailand but also integrates with the region's traditional batik and patteh fabric culture. This project provides a sustainable income source by producing clothing and souvenirs adorned with these floral patterns, celebrating Her Majesty the Queen's birthday.
