The Land Transport Department today began to enforce tough safety rules on passenger vans that compulsorily requires the commercial vehicle to have only 13 passenger seats.
Van operators who fail to comply with the law could face fines of no more than 5,000 baht and a license suspension of no more than six-months.
But on the first day of the enforcement, transport officials said violators will first be given a warning.
Recommendation will be given simultaneously with warning to comply with the new safety rules.
Repeated violation will then be dealt with toughly, officials said.
Under the new safety rules, passenger van must remove it's earlier permitted 15 seats to 13 seats to give room for emergency exit at the rear of the van.
Besides, it must have a red colour reflective emergency exit sign in Thai language that could be clearly visible inside the van.
