The Health Department has appealed to tourists and members of the public not to use foam containers and to refrain from discarding garbage at tourist attractions in a way that may threaten the environment and pose a health hazard.
The department chief Dr Wachira Pengchan said that garbage normally piles up and left uncollected during festivals especially at tourist attractions, causing an eyesore for people.
Garbage such as foam containers and plastic bags has been washed into the sea, threatening the environment and marine lives, he added.
Regarding public toilets at tourist attractions, he claimed that 74 percent of them have met the required standards. But he said that the tourists themselves and those responsible for taking care of the public toilets must help to keep them clean and to flush them every time it was used.
