The Department of Medical Services warns against fake fashion braces, risk of infection, life-threatening

The Dental Institute of the Department of Medical Services warns those who get fake fashion braces that they are at risk of infection, inflammation, and even death from materials and methods that do not meet medical standards. This is a common problem in an era where people have easy access to social media. They recommend that people should be mindful and only seek orthodontic treatment from a dental specialist. Dr. Pairoj Surattanawanich, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, said that from the news about people illegally getting fashion braces, which is a common problem, the latest discovery is that people get braces from online media and are invited to get braces through social media by secretly getting braces in a hotel room. This is a very dangerous act. Braces are a way to correct abnormal bites, crowded teeth, gaps between teeth, and protruding teeth. A dentist must closely supervise every step of the way. This will help improve oral health, increase confidence, and enhance yo ur personality. However, the fashion braces that are currently prevalent have developed a lot from the original. There are large retainer sellers and shops that illegally install fashion braces, such as those in online media. They open small rental shops with 1-2 employees providing services, targeting students and university students. The service fee is cheap, which is an incorrect method and can be dangerous. Therefore, you should receive treatment from a specialist dentist. There should be an assessment before treatment because braces are continuous and take a long time. The equipment used must go through a sterilization process. They must be well packed in a bag. The installation process of the braces must use standard medical cleaning fluid. Therefore, it is not recommended to get braces from people or shops that are not up to standard. However, if you have already done it, you should see a dentist immediately for treatment and correction as soon as possible. Dentist Dr. Sumana Phothisrithong, Director of the Dental Institute, added that fashion braces from illegal shops or clinics have adverse effects on dental and oral health by attaching braces incorrectly, in the wrong position, using the wrong type of braces or equipment, causing the teeth to move in the wrong position and bad bite. It also reduces the efficiency of cleaning the teeth, food particles can easily get stuck, which can cause tooth decay and gingivitis, causing mouth ulcers because the wires and plastic can press on or poke the gums, causing toothache, gum pain, and subsequent infection. In addition, braces that are not attached tightly or loosely can slip into the throat while eating or sleeping. In addition, hazardous substances from using substandard, low-quality tools, such as mercury, arsenic, and lead, may be absorbed into the body or may become infected from dirty procedures, lack of hand washing with disinfectant, and unsterilized tools. All of these can lead to death without realizing it. Therefore, orthodontics should only be per formed by a specialist dentist in a standard dental hospital, including continuous maintenance for good oral health. Source: Thai News Agency
