Bangkok: Mr. Thanakun Jit-Issara, President of the Santi Prachadham Club, has submitted a formal request to Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, President of the House of Representatives, urging an investigation into the activities of the Lawyers Council and alleged rogue lawyers. The letter, accepted by Mr. Kampee Dithakorn, Spokesperson of the President of the House of Representatives, calls for a thorough examination of lawyers' conduct, especially in cases where they are accused of violating professional ethics. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Thanakun has received numerous complaints from the public regarding unethical behavior by lawyers. Allegations include demanding additional property beyond professional fees, revealing confidential information for personal gain, and engaging in extortion, blackmail, and embezzlement. There are also claims of lawyers inciting social and religious divisions, using the justice system to silence dissenters, and conducting actions that violate constitutional rights and freed oms. Mr. Thanakun expressed frustration with the Lawyers Council's response to complaints, noting that the process often fails to protect complainants' identities, exposing them to retaliation. He criticized the council's lack of a clear timeframe for addressing grievances, leading to prolonged conflicts and public disillusionment with the legal profession. He emphasized the need for reform, including lifetime disbarment for those found guilty of serious misconduct, and urged the disclosure of such cases to the public. Concerns were also raised about the potential for religious tensions, with Mr. Thanakun warning of actions by some lawyers that could incite discord between Buddhist and Islamic communities. He submitted evidence of such behavior to the House of Representatives, highlighting the urgency of addressing these issues to prevent escalation into broader conflicts. Mr. Kampee Dithakorn indicated that the legal department would determine the appropriate committee to handle the investigation, emphasi zing the importance of swift action to address both ethical and religious concerns. The matter will be forwarded to the President of the House of Representatives for further consideration.
