Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Lt. Col. Thammanat Prompao, has reinforced his directive to crack down on illegal egg imports, aiming to stabilize the domestic market affected by falling egg prices. The Director-General of the Department of Livestock Development announced the activation of the Egg Board mechanism to regulate hen stock and restore market stability.
According to Thai News Agency, Lt. Col. Thammanat disclosed that the price of chicken eggs has plummeted to 3 baht per egg due to a domestic surplus caused by illegal imports. In response, he has instructed relevant agencies to intensify efforts to curb these imports and called for vigilant monitoring of the situation.
Lt. Col. Thammanat has engaged with farmers, the Egg Raisers Association, and relevant agencies to formulate sustainable solutions to the issue of declining egg prices. Initial aid measures for affected farmers are being developed, in line with the Egg Board's resolution. The resolution necessitates collaborative management of the market and production volume by farmers and operators. Additionally, measures such as setting age limits for laying hens will be fast-tracked to ensure the long-term quality and stability of Thailand's egg market.
Dr. Somchuan Rattanamangkalanon, Director-General of the Department of Livestock Development, has been actively advising and coordinating with parties to address farmers' challenges. He expressed confidence in the Egg and Egg Products Development Policy Committee's mechanisms to manage the egg supply and swiftly restore market balance.
In addressing the delay in releasing breeding hens, which contributes to market oversupply, the Department of Livestock Development is expediting investigations to comply with committee resolutions. This aims to ensure the continued quality, stability, and sustainability of Thai egg production and distribution.
