Bangkok: Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will be required to wear an electronic monitoring (EM) bracelet until his full release from parole on September 9, 2026. This decision, confirmed by a subcommittee, mandates the wearing of the bracelet throughout his parole period, which begins on his release from prison on May 11, 2026.
According to Thai News Agency, Thaksin is among 859 prisoners who qualify for parole under the general criteria set by the subcommittee for parole consideration. The requirement to wear an EM bracelet will remain in effect for the entire parole period, with provisions allowing temporary removal for necessary medical treatments.
A high-ranking Ministry of Justice source stated that the decision is conclusive, having been made after thorough consideration of all pertinent qualifications and legal criteria. The order stands firm with no intention of alteration.
On the day of his release, personnel from the Bangkok Metropolitan Probation Office 7 will visit Klong Prem Central Prison to equip Thaksin with the EM bracelet and provide instructions on its use. This procedure is part of the standard protocol as the prison falls under the office’s jurisdiction.
Post-release, Thaksin is required to report to the Bangkok Probation Office 1 within three days, as his residence, “Baan Chan Song La,” is within this office’s area. During this period, he will receive further details and instructions relevant to his probation, which will necessitate monthly reporting.
Provisions exist for temporary removal of the EM bracelet for medical reasons, such as MRI scans or treatments that involve magnetic fields. This requires a medical certificate proving the necessity of removal, with the bracelet to be reattached post-treatment. Permanent removal is considered only in severe health cases, such as being bedridden or having medical conditions aggravated by the bracelet.
Probation conditions for Thaksin remain consistent with standard parolee guidelines, which include scheduled reporting, travel restrictions, and adherence to the law. Political activities are not specifically prohibited, but Thaksin must comply with all general parole conditions.
Should a royal pardon be granted during the parole period, meeting specific criteria could lead to an early release request submitted to the court by the Department of Corrections.
Thaksin’s personal lawyer, Winyat Chatmontri, disclosed that official instructions regarding the EM bracelet procedure have not yet been received. However, the necessary details will be provided upon his release. After leaving prison, Thaksin plans to return directly to his residence and will report to probation officers within the stipulated timeframe.
Reports indicate that on May 11, 2026, Thaksin will begin processing his release documents at 7:00 AM, departing the infirmary for the prison’s front gate by 7:45 AM, and participating in a flag-raising ceremony at 8:00 AM. His release is anticipated to draw significant attention, with at least ten Shinawatra family members, numerous Red Shirt supporters, and media representatives expected to be present. Klong Prem Central Prison has confirmed that family visits will continue as usual, with arrangements made to accommodate the media and supporters.
