Thailand to Propose Cyber Defense Measures After Global Hacking Wave

Bangkok:The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society of Thailand is set to propose new cybersecurity measures to the National Security Council. This move comes in response to a widespread transnational cyberattack that has affected targets in 99 countries.

According to Thai News Agency, Digital Economy Minister Chaichanok Chidchob reported that malware alerts have been detected on smartphones of prominent political figures, including Abhisit Vejjajiva and Nattapong Ruengpanyawut. Chaichanok highlighted that these breaches are part of a simultaneous global campaign, with information provided by Apple indicating the global nature of the attacks.

The digital ministry aims to establish national countermeasures through this proposal and is collaborating with international experts, global technology companies, and foreign governments experienced in cybersecurity to formulate response plans.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, speaking after an off-site cabinet meeting in Udon Thani, emphasized that relevant state agencies are actively monitoring the situation. He mentioned the involvement of high-technology units under Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education Yodchanan Wongsawat, the digital ministry, and the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau in efforts to prevent hacks and track developments.

Anutin also addressed concerns regarding foreign cyberattacks targeting commercial refrigeration systems in Europe, which aim to raise temperatures. He instructed the Ministry of Commerce to investigate these reports, stressing the importance of protective systems to safeguard Thailand's domestic producers and businesses, given the country's role as an exporter of goods. Anutin expressed confidence in local authorities' ability to protect the sector.
