Thailand records 22,086 new COVID-19 cases and 217 more deaths on Saturday

COVID-19 infections in Thailand continue their relentless surge, logging 22,086 new cases in the past 24 hours, including 5,088 cases in Bangkok alone, as 217 more people die, including two pregnant women, according to the CCSA.

Cumulative infections, since last year, are 885,275 and 856,412 since April 1st 2021. Cumulative recoveries are 667,556, including 23,672 cases today. The death toll since last year is 7,343 and 7,249 since April 1st.

210,376 people are still undergoing treatment, including 59,026 in general hospitals and 151,350 in field hospitals. 5,590 cases are in serious a condition, of whom 1,151 are on ventilators.

Of the new infections reported today, 21,816 cases were locally acquired, 270 are among prisoners and three among foreign arrivals in state quarantine.

Of the new fatalities today, 130 are men and 87 women, aged from 20 to 94. They include 10 Myanmar people, two Cambodians and one Swiss national.

Bangkok has the highest mortality rate, at 96.

Nine other provinces with high infection rates are Samut Sakhon (1,819), Samut Prakan (1,598), Chon Buri (1,254), Nonthaburi (867), Nakhon Pathom (724), Saraburi (686), Ubon Ratchathani (395), Ayutthaya (379) and Chachoengsao (366).

The CCSA admits that the pandemic is showing no signs of relenting, either in Bangkok or elsewhere. Most infections in Bangkok are being found in families, communities, work places, wet markets, construction worker dormitories and factories.

New clusters have been detected in Samut Sakhon, Samut Prakan, Chon Buri, Rayong, Prachin Buri, Chanthaburi and Phitsanuloke.
