Bangkok: Thailand has officially joined Cambodia in the upcoming SEA Games men’s and women’s football tournaments, implementing stringent security plans to ensure the safety of athletes and spectators alike. Mr. Atthakorn Sirilathayakorn, the Minister of Tourism and Sports, has tasked key officials from the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) to oversee preparations for the event.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Preecha Lalun and Mrs. Prodpraon Samanmit, both Deputy Governors at SAT, participated in a crucial Sports Technical Committee meeting at the Deluxe Resort and Spa Hotel. The main focus was the team sports draw for the 33rd SEA Games, which features Thailand in various competitive groups.
The Thai national men’s football team will face Cambodia and Timor-Leste in Group A, while the women’s team will compete against Cambodia, Singapore, and Indonesia in Group A. Other sports, including futsal, indoor volleyball, and snooker billiards, also have Thai teams positioned in strategic groups.
Mr. Preecha emphasized that Thailand, being the host country, has meticulously prepared to welcome athletes from all 11 participating nations. The event organizers, in collaboration with the Royal Thai Police, have devised comprehensive security and hospitality plans to ensure a smooth experience across all competition venues. Minister Atthakorn underscored the significance of hosting the event, aiming to offer a warm welcome to athletes and fans.
In a statement, Mr. Preecha expressed optimism about Thailand’s placement in the Cambodian football group, seeing it as a favorable chance to demonstrate their sports prowess. He reassured that robust security protocols will be in place throughout the tournament. Thai sports fans are encouraged to support their teams with enthusiasm and good sportsmanship.
Dr. Chanwit Pholchiwin, Vice President of the Football Association of Thailand, remarked that facing Cambodia early in the tournament is advantageous, avoiding potential security concerns of a later knockout round match. He also clarified the previous omission of Timor-Leste from the competition lineup, attributing it to an error on Timor-Leste’s part, which has since been rectified. Thailand aims to emerge victorious at the SEA Games.
