Thailand Implements Stricter Regulations on Weight-Loss Injection Pens

Bangkok: The Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced stringent new regulations on the use of weight-loss injection pens, which will now require a doctor's prescription starting September 15th. These measures aim to ensure the safe use of these injections, which have become increasingly popular for weight management, particularly among individuals with obesity. According to Thai News Agency, the Secretary-General of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Pharmacist Supatra Boonsearm, highlighted the growing concerns over the misuse of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists, such as Liraglutide and Semaglutide. These injectable drugs, commonly referred to as "weight-loss pens," are traditionally used to treat type 2 diabetes and aid in weight management for obese individuals. However, their availability online without adequate medical oversight has led to misuse and raised safety concerns. To address these issues, the Ministry of Public Health has issued Ministerial Announcement No. 58, designating injectable GLP-1 drugs as special controlled drugs effective September 15, 2026. Their sale will require a prescription from a doctor and dispensing by a pharmacist. This policy aims to ensure that patients receive appropriate and safe medication, preventing the illegal sale of counterfeit drugs or those of unknown origin. The Thai FDA plans to enhance the monitoring of the distribution of GLP-1 drugs through a comprehensive drug tracking system. Importers, prescribers, and sellers of these drugs are encouraged to report sales data to facilitate tracking from importation to patient dispensing. This system will help prevent unauthorized sales and the distribution of counterfeit drugs. The FDA is also working on refining guidelines for selling and distributing these medications. Businesses, pharmacies, and online distributors are warned to comply with these regulations strictly. Unauthorized sale of controlled drugs, unlicensed drug sales, or selling unregistered drugs will result in severe penalties, including imprison ment and fines. Violations of drug advertising laws could lead to fines of up to 100,000 baht. The new regulations are not intended to restrict patient access to medication. Instead, they aim to enhance safety by ensuring the traceability of drugs from their source to the end-user. Patients can verify authorized GLP-1 drug products by checking the serial number on the FDA website. Any discrepancies or suspicious activities should be reported to the FDA hotline or the Oryor Smart Application, available around the clock, for further investigation and legal action against offenders.
