Thailand Identifies Three Priority Areas as Host of APEC in 2022

As host of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit and related meetings in 2022, Thailand has identified three priority areas.

According to a report from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the three areas include (1) facilitating trade and investment; (2) rebooting regional connectivity, particularly the travel and tourism industry; and (3) advancing sustainable, balanced, and inclusive growth through the concept of Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha on 12 July 2021 chaired the second meeting of the National Committee on the Preparation of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and Related Meetings in 2022, as Thailand will take over the APEC hosting from New Zealand in November this year.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant agencies will foster close cooperation with other APEC member economies to accelerate the post-COVID-19 economic recovery and promote sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth.

The relevant government agencies and the private sector are developing initiatives and projects, in coordination with other member economies and regional partners, to ensure tangible outcomes and benefits for people and businesses.

One of the objectives is to build capacity in digital economy, sustainable transportation, renewable energy, low carbon emission, innovative waste management, and structural reform to promote inclusive economic participation and access to opportunities.

In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Silpakorn University are co- organizing the APEC 2022 Thailand Logo Competition under the Fifth National Youth Design Awards to promote youth engagement in the APEC hosting, as well as the Thai creative economy. Young designers submitted close to 600 APEC 2022 logo designs. The winning one will be used throughout Thailand’s hosting.

To welcome delegates and visitors from around the world, Thailand places great importance to safe and firm entry and public health measures and explores an appropriate meeting format, taking into account the impacts on the environment and the evolving nature of the pandemic as top priorities.
