Bangkok:The Ministry of Finance highlighted Thailand's strategic initiatives as the nation hosted the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. This marked the largest economic event in Thailand in 35 years, drawing over 18,000 attendees from around the globe, including representatives from finance ministries and central banks of 191 countries, as well as executives from multinational institutions and international media.
According to Thai News Agency, a key focus of the event was Thailand's role as a middle power in bridging divisions among economic powers. Dr. Ekniti Nitithanprapas, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, participated in discussions with global financial leaders, emphasizing Thailand’s strategic location and its potential to foster cooperation in a fragmented world.
The event also showcased Thailand's AI strategy, which aims to integrate artificial intelligence across various sectors to boost job creation and economic opportunities. The Ministry of Finance introduced the "AI Whispering Bird" application to assist small businesses with financial management and loan applications. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance digital infrastructure and ensure equitable access to AI technologies.
Cultural elements were woven into the conference, with attendees receiving traditional Thai cotton tote bags and enjoying Thai massages and performances. This cultural integration aimed to leave a lasting impression on international delegates.
The hosting of the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings is seen as a significant opportunity for Thailand, both in immediate economic benefits from the influx of visitors and in long-term prospects for foreign investment and technology transfer.
