Thailand Hosts Asian Water Council Event to Tackle Water-Related Disasters

Bangkok:Thailand and the Asian Water Council (AWC) are jointly addressing water-related disasters by enhancing innovative technologies aimed at mitigating floods and droughts. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the AWC is hosting a significant event focusing on upgrading technologies to reduce risks to life and property.

According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Songsak Thongsi presided over the opening ceremony of the AWC academic seminar and exhibition on water management technology. The event, held at The Athenee Hotel in Bangkok, was attended by Dr. Sok Dae Yoon, President of AWC; Mr. Chayan Muang Song, Secretary-General of the National Water Resources Office (NWRO); and representatives from AWC member countries, government agencies, international organizations, academic institutions, and the private sector.

Deputy Prime Minister Songsak Thongsri highlighted the increasing severity and complexity of water-related issues across Asia, where some regions suffer from heavy rainfall and flooding while others face drought and water shortages. These challenges impact livelihoods, agriculture, food security, and the economy, underscoring the need for systematic planning and accurate data in water management.

The seminar emphasizes the role of technology and innovation in enabling rapid monitoring, data analysis, forecasting, and early warning systems. Such advancements allow agencies to make informed decisions and prepare for water-related situations effectively. The event serves as a platform for countries to showcase water management technologies, exchange knowledge, and discuss potential collaborations between governmental and private sectors.

Thailand is committed to collaborating with AWC and its member countries to develop information systems and technology and enhance human resource capabilities in water resources. This collaboration aims to strengthen preparedness for water-related disasters, reducing risks and mitigating long-term impacts on people's lives and property.

The event, taking place from November 4-6, 2026, includes the 25th AWC Executive Committee Meeting, the 5th AWC General Assembly, and a preparatory meeting for the 4th Asia Water Conference. It also features academic seminars, presentations on water technology and innovations, exhibitions, field trips, and training aimed at exchanging knowledge on water management to cope with disasters and droughts.
