Bangkok: Thailand and Singapore have taken significant steps to bolster their bilateral ties, focusing on enhancing cooperation across various sectors, including green economy, food security, connectivity, and digital advancements. The two nations exchanged pivotal agreements on rice trade and healthcare, underscoring their commitment to a stable, prosperous, and sustainable region.
According to Thai News Agency, the exchange of memorandums was witnessed by Thailand's Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, and Singapore's Prime Minister, Mr. Lawrence Wong. The first memorandum focused on rice trade, facilitating the sale of up to 100,000 tons of Thai rice to Singapore over five years, thereby strengthening trade relations and ensuring regional food security. The second memorandum aimed at enhancing healthcare leadership in urban aging care through collaboration between Thai and Singaporean medical institutions.
Following the agreements, the leaders held a joint press conference to highlight the significance of their collaboration, marking 60 years of diplomatic relations. They agreed to promote cooperation in four key areas: green economy and sustainable development, economic resilience and connectivity, digital integration, and food security.
In terms of green economy initiatives, the two countries signed a Carbon Credit Trading Agreement, Singapore's first with an ASEAN country, and discussed renewable energy cooperation, including the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project Phase 2. For economic resilience, Thailand welcomed Singapore's investments in high-tech sectors and explored joint ventures in aviation.
On digital cooperation, both nations committed to enhancing digital integration through agreements like the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement and the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement. The focus on food security was underscored by the rice trade memorandum, ensuring the supply of quality Thai rice to Singapore.
Security and defense cooperation will also see enhancement, with both countries focusing on combating transnational crime, particularly online crime. Thailand plans to host an international conference on this issue, collaborating closely with Singapore.
Lastly, the two nations reiterated their commitment to regional cooperation, aiming to boost ASEAN's efficiency and resilience. They pledged to explore deeper economic integration and regional connectivity across multiple sectors, with Thailand poised to leverage its strategic position as a logistics hub in Southeast Asia.
