Thailand Advances Net Zero 2050 Goals with Proposal for ASEAN Climate Center

Bangkok:Thailand is taking significant steps towards achieving its Net Zero 2050 goals as Suchart Chomklin, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, has proposed to the Cabinet the establishment of an ASEAN Climate Change Centre to strengthen regional cooperation.

According to Thai News Agency, the Cabinet meeting held on October 27, 2026, approved the ratification for the establishment of this center. The primary aim is to enhance collaboration among ASEAN member states in tackling climate change challenges, facilitating increased access to funding, technology, and knowledge. Additionally, the center will develop a comprehensive database to aid in policy formulation and drive Thailand's mission of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2050.

The ASEAN Centre for Climate Change is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting the region's capabilities in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change impacts. It will also promote the exchange of technology and knowledge among member states, thereby enhancing operational capabilities and supporting the achievement of global climate objectives.

Thailand is set to chair the ASEAN Working Group on Climate Change starting February 2027 and is preparing for the ASEAN chairmanship in 2028. The country plans to focus on promoting cooperation on crucial issues, including upgrading carbon credit standards through the HACI project, reducing methane emissions, and linking data with the ASEAN Centre to bolster data exchange and support regional climate change initiatives.
