Bangkok: The Thai men's sepak takraw team emerged victorious in the 39th King's Cup, defeating their long-time rivals, Malaysia, with a 2-0 win in the tournament held at Fashion Island Shopping Mall. This victory marks Thailand's 37th triumph in the prestigious competition.
According to Thai News Agency, the Thai team showcased remarkable skills and coordination in the final match against Malaysia, also known as "The Yellow Tigers." Team A, featuring Porntep Thinbangbon as the server, Marukin Panmakorn as the setter, and Jirasak Pakbuangern as the hitter, secured a 2-0 victory with scores of 15-7 and 15-11, giving Thailand an initial lead. Team B, led by server Kritsanapong Nonthakhot, setter Wuttinan Kamsanoh, and hitter Thanapol Sapyean, maintained the momentum with another 2-0 win, achieving scores of 15-9 and 15-12. This decisive performance allowed Thailand to avenge their previous defeat by Malaysia and claim the championship title once again.
Mr. Thana Chaiyaprasit, President of the Sepak Takraw Association of Thailand, expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, highlighting their achievement of winning six gold medals and restoring pride to Thai sepak takraw fans. He emphasized the importance of learning from past mistakes and aiming for gold medals at the upcoming Asian Games.
In a separate development, the International Sepak Takraw Federation (ISTAF) is contemplating sanctions against five Thai players - Wichan Temkhot, Chakrit Thinbangbon, Phutawan Sopha, Sittipong Khamchan, and Jatuphon Siri-arj - due to their walkout during the World Cup in Malaysia. This situation renders them ineligible for the Asian Games in Japan.
Dr. Sihasak Areerachakarn, Vice President and Secretary-General of the Association, mentioned that they are awaiting the e-staff's report on the matter. He remains hopeful for the players' return to the team, expressing his belief that no severe disciplinary offenses were committed. While he personally disagrees with suspending the players, he respects the e-staff's decision in determining any potential punishment. Despite their current ineligibility for the Asian Games, the players continue to train with the team and remain on the long list, with efforts underway to seek permission for their participation in future competitions.
