Thai Government Expands Free Pneumococcal Vaccines for Children

Bangkok: The government is increasing the availability of free pneumococcal vaccines for Thai children, enhancing disease prevention and reducing the risk of pneumonia and meningitis. This measure is now in effect.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, revealed that the government is moving forward with upgrading the preventive healthcare system. Most recently, the National Health Security Office (NHSO) issued an announcement in the Royal Gazette on April 30, 2026, designating the "Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV)" as a mandatory healthcare service under the health promotion and disease prevention program for Thai children. This comes into effect the day after the announcement.

The announcement aims to ensure that Thai children have equitable and effective access to essential vaccines, with budget support from the National Health Security Fund. This will help reduce the risk of serious infectious diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis, which are major causes of illness and death in young children.

The provision of PCV vaccinations commenced on March 2, 2026, and is officially considered a health promotion and disease prevention service under this announcement.

Ms. Lalida stated that including the PCV vaccine in the national health insurance system's benefits is another important step for the government in investing in "prevention before treatment," which not only helps reduce long-term healthcare costs but also ensures that Thai children grow up healthy and safe from serious diseases.

"This is about improving the quality of life for Thai children from the very beginning, ensuring everyone has equal access to essential vaccines, reducing inequality, and building a strong and sustainable public health system," said Ms. Lalida.
