Thai Fresh Fruit Exports Have Increased Despite Impacts from COVID-19

Deputy Government Spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek stated that, amidst the COVID-19 situation, which has badly affected the global economy, Thai fresh fruit exports during the past year increased by 15.4 percent.

Despite the fall of Thai exports by 6 percent in 2020, she said, the Thai agriculture sector continued to grow. In particular, Thailand exported 164,000 tons of fresh fruit, worth over 104 billion baht, in 2020.

Ms. Ratchada cited the quality of Thai agricultural products as one of the reasons. Other factors include the good potential of the private sector and the joint operations by the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives to seek more marketing channels, both online and offline, and to produce in response to the market demand in terms of quality and safety. The Government has a policy to develop Thailand into a global hub for food and agricultural products of high quality.

Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Chalermchai Sri-on said that the ministry has developed the production system under the “safe agriculture safe food” policy and created confidence among consumers through the Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards.

Mr. Chalermchai said that the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has expanded its cooperation with China in fruit exports. With this cooperation, Thai fruit exports to China reached more than 70 billion baht in 2020.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit has instructed Thai commercial counsellors in 43 countries to assess the demands of overseas markets to boost Thai exports and expand e-commerce, while seeking ways to distribute Thai products to such major markets as China, India, and the United States. A target has been set for Thai exports to grow by 4 percent this year.
