Thai Election Commission Asserts Transparency Amidst Calls for Political Reform

Bangkok: The Secretary-General of Thailand's Election Commission (EC), Mr. Saweng Boonmee, has reaffirmed the transparency of the Thai election system, despite acknowledging ongoing challenges and the unmet goal of political reform. Speaking on the occasion of the EC's 27th anniversary, he highlighted the agency's extensive experience navigating the country's political landscape and its cooperative relationships with various sectors. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Boonmee compared the EC's 27-year history to a person transitioning through adolescence, having faced numerous political challenges but consistently receiving support from government bodies, private sectors, and the media. He emphasized that the EC's operations align with constitutional provisions, serving as a mechanism to ensure smooth political processes in the country. Mr. Boonmee underscored the need for political reform, as stipulated in the 1997, 2007, and 2017 constitutions, noting that achieving this goal remains elusive. He clarified that the EC's role is not to directly reform politics but to facilitate and mediate as citizens play a crucial role in shaping good politics. He outlined three primary tasks for the EC: preparing citizens for democratic governance, supporting political parties as key institutions for political development, and managing elections transparently. Mr. Boonmee insisted on the integrity of the Thai electoral process, governed by four principles: transparency, independence, participation, and facilitation. He assured that any allegations of electoral misconduct would be thoroughly investigated to uphold fairness and justice. Looking ahead, Mr. Boonmee detailed upcoming elections, including senator elections, local elections, and gubernatorial elections in Bangkok and Pattaya. He urged eligible voters to participate actively, highlighting the EC's commitment to working tirelessly, even on weekends, to educate and engage with citizens. The EC aims to collaborate with political parties, civil servants, and organizat ions to promote good governance for the benefit of all Thais, emphasizing the significant impact politics has on everyday life.
