THAI DEPUTY PM: 2019 ELECTION TIME FRAME BETWEEN FEB 24 AND MAY 5

BANGKOK, Thailand The Thai Deputy Prime Minister reassured the Thai media Monday that the time frame set for the 2019 General Election will be between Feb 24 and May 5 next year.

According to Xinhua news agency, Wissanu Krea-ngam also said political restrictions would soon be eased to allow political parties to go ahead with political activities.

He did not spell out the exact date the ban would be eased but both the senators and MP bills are being reviewed by His Majesty the King, who has 90 days to endorse them, or until mid-September.

After they are endorsed, they will be published in the Royal Gazette. The senator law will take effect immediately but the MP law will take effect 90 days after it is published, during which the political ban would be eased.

As soon as the restrictions were lifted, political parties would be allowed to carry out restricted political activities without needing prior approval from the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), said Wissanu.

Some of the political activities include the holding of party meetings, carrying primary elections to choose election candidates and splitting of election constituencies, he said, adding that special political activities would need advance approval from the NCPO before being carried out.

He said political restrictions would be completely revoked within 150 days after the enforcement of the two election laws the MP election and the senator selection bills.
