Suzuki to Launch Affordable Mini Electric Vehicle in Japan

Tokyo:Suzuki Motor Corp. has announced the upcoming release of its first mini electric vehicle, the e Sky minicar, set for November 16, with a starting price of 2.12 million yen, making it the most affordable mini EV in Japan.

According to Thai News Agency, the e Sky minicar will be priced lower than BYD Co.'s Racco mini EV, which costs 2.14 million yen. Factoring in a state subsidy of 568,000 yen, the cost of the e Sky could drop to as low as 1,552,000 yen.

Suzuki has emphasized ease of handling and convenience in the development of this new mini EV, leveraging its extensive experience in minivehicles. The company has also focused on reducing weight and enhancing energy efficiency, achieving a driving range of 310 kilometers, which is among the longest in its segment.

The automaker's goal is to sell 1,000 units per month, targeting customers transitioning from gasoline-powered vehicles. At a press conference in Tokyo, Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki highlighted the everyday practicality of the e Sky, describing it as a vehicle built with the full strength of Suzuki.

Japan's mini EV market is anticipated to grow more competitive with the entry of Chinese automakers. BYD's Racco, launched in July, sold 648 units by September's end. Additionally, Yokohama-based EMT Co., a joint venture among five companies including Autobacs Seven Co. and China's Chery Automobile Co., plans to introduce a mini EV model in 2027.
