Bangkok: The National Astronomical Research and Development Agency (NARIT) is inviting the public to witness a remarkable astronomical event on the night of November 5, when a "Super Full Moon" will grace the skies. This celestial occurrence marks the full moon being the closest to Earth this year, resulting in a brighter and larger appearance than usual.
According to Thai News Agency, the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) or NARIT encourages everyone to experience the moon's amplified brilliance and size due to its proximity to Earth. The moon will be visible from 5:30 p.m. in the eastern sky after sunset and can be admired throughout the night. This variation in the moon's size is scientifically attributed to its elliptical orbit around Earth, with periods of closest proximity, known as perigee, and farthest distance, known as apogee, causing noticeable changes in its apparent size each month.
To enhance public engagement with this astronomical spectacle on Loi Krathong night, NARIT has arranged for five telescopes to be set up nationwide, offering free viewing opportunities from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The viewing locations include the Sirindhorn Astronomical Park in Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai Province, as well as observatories in Chachoengsao Province, Khon Kaen Province, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, and Songkhla Province.
During this event, NARIT will also hold a ceremony to express condolences to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, in recognition of her immeasurable grace. Furthermore, NARIT has recently inaugurated the "Stargazing Festival...Winter Breeze 2025-2026" at the Sirindhorn Astronomical Park in Chiang Mai Province. This festival offers free stargazing every Saturday night from November 2025 to May 2026, featuring telescope-based stargazing, astronomical exhibitions, and science-inspired activities to foster astronomical learning and tourism, enhancing the vibrant winter atmosphere in Chiang Mai.
