Bangkok: Speaker Chuan Leekpai has delivered a scathing critique of the current Election Commission, describing it as the most criticized in history due to allegations of political interference and manipulation in the selection of candidates. Chuan emphasized the pervasive system of gratitude and reciprocity and noted that while Anutin's government is anticipated to assume power in 2025, those involved in alleged electoral fraud share names with current Cabinet members. He cautioned against denying these truths, as doing so could result in legal consequences.
According to Thai News Agency, during a House of Representatives meeting to review the Election Commission's (EC) performance report for fiscal years 2024 and 2025, Mr. Chuan, a Democrat Party list MP, referenced a royal address dated March 15, 1984. This address, included on the first page of the EC's report, highlighted the dual responsibilities of civil servants: to perform duties efficiently and to uphold national integrity. Chuan urged civil servants to fulfill their roles diligently.
He further elaborated that, despite the EC's efforts to complete each election, it has failed in efficiency and upholding national virtues, allowing wrongdoers to go unpunished. Chuan criticized the EC for being the most scrutinized in history, with accusations of political interference in the candidate selection process. He acknowledged his past involvement in the selection committee.
Chuan expressed concern about the level of political interference affecting independent organizations like the EC, attributing it to a cultural system of gratitude and obligation. He emphasized that this reciprocal system can distort moral judgments, urging the EC to conduct fair elections devoid of corruption. He recounted his efforts to communicate with various officials, including writing to the EC Secretary-General, the Ministry of Interior, and the National Police Chief, all of which yielded no results due to political maneuverings.
He warned that continued misconduct by the EC would erode credibility and respect, leading to flawed elections. Chuan stressed the importance of upholding righteousness and truth, urging EC officials to avoid defamation and slander.
Chuan highlighted the separation of events between the 2024 Senate election fraud and the anticipated 2025 premiership of Mr. Anutin. He clarified that accusations against the Prime Minister's involvement in electoral fraud are unfounded but acknowledged the problematic overlap of names between those involved in the fraud and current Cabinet members. He warned that denying these truths could lead to legal charges, as the matter is likely to be resolved in court.
In his concluding remarks, Chuan emphasized that adherence to fairness and integrity by the EC is crucial in preventing electoral fraud. He questioned the establishment of a new sub-committee following an investigation by Sub-committee No. 26, seeking clarity on the reasons and authority behind forming Sub-committee No. 36.
