Bangkok: Siripong Angkasakulkiat, deputy leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, has emphasized the need for cooperative involvement of soldiers and local communities in the management of border checkpoints between Thailand and Cambodia. He is optimistic that the Defense Minister will reconsider the current stance following the transition to a new government.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Siripong addressed public concerns regarding the recent agreement by the General Border Committee (GBC) to ease restrictions on the border checkpoints. He highlighted the need for the removal of heavy weaponry from disputed areas as a step towards easing tensions, while also stressing that the presence of military forces along the border requires a comprehensive solution.
Mr. Siripong pointed to the situation in the Ban Nong Chan area of Sa Kaeo Province, where Cambodians continue to reside within Thai borders. He stressed that this issue demands decisive and lawful management by the Thai government. The individuals in question must adhere to strict legal procedures whether they choose to stay or return.
In addressing the public discourse over border checkpoint closures, Mr. Siripong advised that the army should engage with local residents to evaluate both the security and economic implications. He acknowledged the reliance of businesses on border trade and the absence of regular salaries for many families, underscoring the importance of trade as a vital resource for the government and the community. Thus, a collaborative approach is necessary to reach a solution that benefits all parties.
"The government, led by the Prime Minister, prioritizes restoring normal life for the people. However, at the same time, we must fully protect the sovereignty and dignity of the country," stated Mr. Siripong. He emphasized the critical role of the military as the primary decision-making body in border areas.
Mr. Siripong also referenced General Nattapol Nakphanit, the acting Deputy Minister of Defense and potential future Defense Minister under the incoming government of Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul. He noted that General Nattapol's involvement in recent discussions aligns with the framework of the previous administration.
There is an expectation that General Nattapol's position will evolve to align with the new government's policy on defending Thailand's territorial integrity once it officially assumes power.
Lastly, Mr. Siripong stressed the significance of effective public communication about border disputes to promote unity and mutual understanding within society. He warned against any actions that could provoke further conflict, as this would jeopardize national security over time.
