Bangkok: Deporting foreigners who have committed offenses is only a short-term solution to reduce pressure, according to security experts. They emphasize that amending laws, restructuring power, and addressing the problem systemically would yield more significant results.
According to Thai News Agency, Associate Professor Dr. Panithan Wattanayagorn, an expert in security and foreign affairs, expressed concerns regarding Thai law and the deportation of foreigners. He stated that regulating foreigners who create problems in Thailand, disrespect the law, and violate regulations requires a systemic approach. This involves all nationalities residing in Thailand, including those involved in call center gangs, online gambling websites, real estate ownership through nominees, and illegal migrant workers from neighboring countries. Deportation is considered a short-term solution, particularly when a court has issued a verdict. For pending cases, deportation orders can be issued under the authority of the Ministry of Interior.
Dr. Panithan explained that several agencies currently possess the authority to deport, such as the Immigration Bureau's power to deny entry and other security forces that perceive these individuals as threats. These actions are taken on a case-by-case basis but could lead to public support or reduce pressure, especially given ongoing protests in front of embassies. Without genuine understanding, these protests could escalate into more serious problems or negatively impact international relations.
To address the root cause of the problem, Dr. Panithan suggested bringing all relevant agencies together to consider three key issues: real estate ownership, committing offenses online, and the problem of illegal migrant workers. He stressed that these issues are interconnected and proposed restructuring the power structure to create systematic coordination through a permanent committee. This would involve amending numerous overlapping laws, establishing new agencies, abolishing redundant ones, assigning clear responsibilities, and systematically addressing these issues for clearer results.
