Security at Wat Ratchabophit has been stepped up following a fire at the ancient door of the chapel of the temple on Thursday.
A police team, led by Pol Maj-Gen Surachet Hakparn, commander of the police task force, was rushed to the temple to examine the wooden door said to be about 150 years which sustained damage by the fire.
A caretaker of the temple told police that the chapel has been under repairs for quite some time and the working is still going on.
However, Pol Maj-Gen Surachet said that a foot patrol unit would be stationed at the temple on rotation basis and a police patrol car would be patrolling the temple occasionally as a security measure.
The abbot of the temple, Somdet Phra Maha Muniwong , was recently appointed the 20th supreme patriarch of Thailand by His Majesty the King.
A formal appointment ceremony is scheduled to take place at 5 pm on Sunday at Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha to be presided over by HM the King.
