Second court upholds 20-year jail sentence on Thai wife for murder of Japanese husband in 2014

The Appeals Court this morning upheld the Criminal Court's ruling that sentenced a Thai wife to 20 years in prison after finding her guilty in a murder conspiracy of a 79-year-old Japanese teacher in September 2014.

Mrs Pornchanok Chaiyapa and her Thai husband Somchai Keawbangyang were convicted in a conspiracy to kill Mr Yoshinori Shimato and chopped his body and threw the pieces into a canal in Bang Bo district of Samut Prakarn in September 2014.

Somchai was given a life sentence while Pornchanok receive 20 years in prison.

At the hearing of her appeal today, the Appeals Court said that although Pornchanok confessed to using her Japanese husband's credit card, she denied her involvement in the murder conspiracy.

The court said although there was no witness, but circumstantial evidence and her Thai husband's confession and crime reenactment showed she was involved.

The court then upheld the 20-year jail sentence earlier handed down by the first court.
