Bangkok: Santhana Prayoonrat, a former Special Branch police officer, has strongly refuted claims of betrayal and insists on his non-involvement with gambling websites after a police operation led to his arrest at a luxury hotel in Bangkok. Despite the situation, he remains confident about securing bail and expresses no concern about the legal proceedings.
According to Thai News Agency, Santhana was apprehended by investigators from the Metropolitan Police Bureau's Investigation Division and Thonglor Police Station following an arrest warrant issued by the Bangkok South Criminal Court. The warrant was part of a larger operation targeting a gang involved in robbery, extortion, and other serious crimes. While eight arrest warrants were issued, only four individuals, including Santhana, were detained at the hotel. The search also led to the discovery of four firearms.
Upon his arrival at Thonglor Police Station, Santhana vocally addressed the media, alleging betrayal by the political establishment and the Royal Thai Police. He emphasized his cooperation with law enforcement over the past four years, despite the ongoing legal battle, and his resolve to face the charges.
Santhana clarified that the charges against him include kidnapping and extorting a Taiwanese citizen. While he is in the process of filing a petition with the prosecutor, he firmly denies any links to gambling websites. He pointed out that the investigation included political figures and raised questions about the involvement of Police General Torsak Sukwimol and Police General Surachet Hakpal. Santhana expressed his intention to exercise his right to bail and his determination not to yield to political pressure.
Throughout the media interaction, Santhana questioned the necessity of the large police presence during his arrest, likening it to a dramatic production. He reiterated that the case is not connected to any current conflicts and maintained his readiness to surrender if contacted, dismissing any plans of fleeing.
