Sa Kaeo Screens Documentary on Camp 511 to Highlight Historical Refugee Crisis

Sa kaeo: Last night at the Ban Nong Chan border, a significant event unfolded as the Thai side presented a documentary titled “Camp 511.” The film sheds light on the historical narrative of Cambodians fleeing the Khmer Rouge and the compassionate response of Thailand in opening its borders to offer refuge. Narrated in Khmer, the documentary aims to evoke the benevolence extended by the Thai people during a turbulent period.

According to Thai News Agency, the screening of “Camp 511” serves a dual purpose. It seeks not only to remind viewers of the past humanitarian efforts of Thailand but also to address current territorial disputes. The documentary asserts Thai ownership of the border territory and raises awareness of ongoing security concerns. This comes amid reports of some migrants, who once found sanctuary on Thai soil, now attempting to encroach upon or lay claim to the territory. Such actions have spurred discussions on whether these are reciprocations for the past kindness of the Thai people.

In a related development, a video clip surfaced at 01.02 hrs. from Cambodian soldiers, accompanied by a caption that read, “Tonight, leaving in the middle of the night, after midnight, feeling sleepy. Commander orders reinforcements at the front line.” This further underscores the tense atmosphere surrounding the border region.
