Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan has sent a signal to the Royal Thai Navy to submit to the cabinet this month its proposal to purchase a submarine from China otherwise it will miss out from the deliberations of this fiscal year's budget.
An informed defence source said that the cabinet are scheduled to meet twice, February 21 and 28 this month and any project for the cabinet's approval is not submitted within this month will not be included in this year's budget.
The RTN has shown interest in acquiring the S26T type of submarine from China estimated to cost 13 billion baht each.
China Shipbuilding and Off-shore International Company (CSOC) has proposed to sell three submarines to the RTN at a total cost of 36 billion baht under a package which includes training, support, special equipment, maintenance and four live torpedos and two for training purpose.
