Bangkok:The Royal Thai Army has expressed concerns regarding a Cambodian film that references Thai soldiers, fearing it may adversely affect the ongoing efforts to restore diplomatic ties between Thailand and Cambodia.
According to Thai News Agency, Major General Winthai Suvari, spokesman for the Royal Thai Army, addressed the issue of the Cambodian film, which is set to be released on November 6, 2026. The film reportedly depicts events along the Thai-Cambodian border and features promotional material that alludes to Thai soldiers. The Army’s position is that the film represents personal memories and is not a historical record based on true events.
The spokesperson emphasized that the film's portrayal of military operations is embellished for cinematic effect. The Army is currently conducting an investigation to ascertain the filmmakers' true intentions, assessing whether the film is purely for entertainment or if it harbors agendas that could harm Thailand’s image.
The Army has stressed the importance of learning history through factual evidence and comprehensive academic work. This perspective aligns with the stance of the government and the Joint Information Center (JIC), both of which have expressed concerns about media that might misrepresent Thai-Cambodian history and potentially incite misunderstanding or hatred.
Currently, Thailand and Cambodia are working through negotiation mechanisms to resolve issues, making communication between the nations sensitive. The Cambodian side has reportedly presented information on various issues, some of which lack factual basis, through different channels.
The Royal Thai Army urges the public to critically assess information, distinguishing between theatrical portrayals and facts, and to seek information from credible sources. The Army is prepared to monitor the situation closely and engage in discussions through the Joint Information Center or diplomatic channels if necessary.
