Royal Thai Army Asserts Readiness to Defend Sovereignty Amid Border Tensions

Bangkok: The Royal Thai Army Headquarters convened a critical meeting with the commanders of the armed forces to underscore their preparedness to defend national sovereignty and ensure the safety of citizens, particularly in the Thai-Cambodian border area. During the meeting, the Royal Thai Army affirmed that it was Cambodia that initiated the recent border skirmish.

According to Thai News Agency, the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters conducted the 4th Armed Forces Commanders' Meeting for the Fiscal Year 2025 at the Royal Thai Air Force Headquarters. The meeting was chaired by General Songwit Noonpakdee, the Supreme Commander, and included the Commanders of the Royal Thai Army, Navy, Air Force, and the Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police.

The Commander-in-Chief extended his appreciation to the Royal Thai Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police for their unwavering support of the government, particularly in maintaining border sovereignty under all circumstances, while emphasizing adherence to the Constitutional framework.

The armed forces have been vigilant in monitoring the situation and are prepared to provide comprehensive support to the Royal Thai Army. During the meeting, a detailed report on the Chong Bok border area clashes in Ubon Ratchathani Province was presented, highlighting that the Thai military's actions were lawful and aimed at de-escalation.

The army clarified that the incident unfolded when Thai troops patrolling within their territory were fired upon by Cambodian soldiers, prompting a return of fire. Despite diplomatic efforts, including the established negotiation mechanisms, the situation remains unresolved. The Thai military has noted the presence of additional Cambodian forces, posing a security threat.

In response, the Army Commander has ordered heightened readiness across all units, including personnel, equipment, and emergency plans, to tackle any potential threats to sovereignty and civilian safety. The meeting also reviewed the preparedness of all armed forces to protect the nation comprehensively, focusing on intelligence, operations, logistics, and support to governmental agencies.

The Royal Thai Police reiterated their commitment to defending national sovereignty, mandating full preparedness in border areas, enhancing news investigation measures, and tightening border security against potential threats, including cyber threats and misinformation. They pledged close collaboration with the military.

Concluding the meeting, the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters, alongside the Navy, Air Force, and Police, pledged full support to the Army's missions, emphasizing international principles to maintain regional peace and stability. The Royal Thai Army urged public confidence in their efforts to safeguard sovereignty and called for unity in upholding national stability and peace.
