Bangkok: Ratchanok Srinok, a party-list MP from the People's Party, has called on the government to urgently address delays in disbursing funds from the Student Loan Fund (SLF), warning of a potential 7 billion baht shortfall by 2027.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ratchanok emphasized the uncertainty faced by students awaiting loan approval and disbursement, many of whom have already commenced their studies. She highlighted the impact on tuition, dormitory fees, and living expenses, with some universities cautioning students they may be unable to take exams without the funds.
Ms. Ratchanok urged the government to allocate sufficient resources and avoid retroactive changes to loan criteria for current students. She noted the government should facilitate access to education, allowing students to focus on development rather than financial uncertainty.
Concerns were also raised about the criteria for government-promoted academic fields in 2026. Ms. Ratchanok requested that changes apply only to new students and not those already in the system. She called for an adequate budget to prevent recurring issues, citing SLF estimates of a 7 billion baht shortfall by 2027.
Mr. Paradorn Prisnanantakul, Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office, clarified that the SLF budget for 2027 has increased to 9 billion baht. He stressed efficient debt management and proposed collecting repayments from those capable of paying. The new loan criteria will only affect future borrowers.
Ms. Ratchanok concluded that resolving these issues is vital for student confidence in their educational journey, ensuring they can continue their studies without yearly financial concerns.
