Rasm Criticizes Anutin Over Comments on Border Dispute

Bangkok: Rasm criticized Anutin on the issue of “Cambodia encroaching on Thailand, Thailand encroaching on Cambodia,” insisting that the statement should not come from the mouth of a national leader, fearing that Cambodia would use it as evidence, risking Thailand being disadvantaged on the international stage.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Rasme Chalichan, former Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed concern over Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s interview during a visit to Malaysia, which stated, “Cambodia has encroached on Thailand’s borders, and Thailand has encroached on Cambodia’s borders.” He stated that these statements are extremely dangerous and should never be uttered publicly by a Thai government leader, as they could have international legal implications. In principle, statements by a Prime Minister or Minister of Foreign Affairs can be used as evidence in court and on international forums. This is something government leaders must be aware of, as every statement directly reflects the Thai state’s diplomatic position.

Mr. Rasm stated that no Thai leader has ever admitted to encroaching on Cambodian territory. Thailand stands by its principled claim under international law, and the final border demarcation process must be based on the results of negotiations with parliamentary approval. Such irresponsible comments directly impact Thailand’s negotiating position and open the door for Cambodia to use the Thai Prime Minister’s words in the future. At the very least, Mr. Anutin’s remarks will weaken Thailand’s position in border negotiations and could put it at a disadvantage in multilateral forums if escalated to an international level.

Mr. Rasm also questioned how Mr. Anutin would take responsibility for this damage. A simple apology likely wouldn’t be enough to address this level of damage, as this is a failed foreign policy by a leader. More importantly, what guarantees will there be to prevent further damage?
